MICROSOFT ASKS FOR UBUNTU 8.10 REMOVAL FROM HOSTING SERVICE CLAIMING COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

Microsoft has been made responsible for the removal of an Ubuntu image from a Polish file hosting service.

Most of the legit file hosting services try to discourage people from uploading illegal files, such as pirated Windows 8 images or games, but they rarely dispute the claims made by the parties involved.

This seems to be the case with the Polish file hosting website Chomikuj.pl, which received a copyright infringement letter from Microsoft regarding one of the files hosted on their servers, ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso.

According to di.com.pl, the hosting website immediately removed the files, leaving its owner wondering what he had done wrong.

Most likely, the files have been discovered by a search algorithm, which can look at several factors. The name, which in this case contains 8.10, might have been a trigger, which is also the most likely explanation.

On the other hand, it might have been an illegal copy of Windows 8.1 renamed to Ubuntu 8.10, and the search algorithm just looked at the size and hash sum.

In any case, it would be interesting to see how far these Microsoft infringement letters can go. Is everything with 8.10 in the name now in danger if it's hosted in the cloud?
